Dr. Olds is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is a Training and Supervising Analyst at The Columbia Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. He is a Founding Member of theBerkshire Psychoanalytic Institute, where he is a Training and Supervising Analyst.
He received his BA in philosophy at Yale, his MD at Columbia P&S, his psychiatric training at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, and his psychoanalytic training at Columbia.
He has taught courses in psychotherapy to the residents at Columbia, and courses in psychoanalytic theory and the biological sciences at the Columbia Psychoanalytic Center. He has organized the development of the interdisciplinary studies programs at the Columbia Psychoanalytic Center and at the Berkshire Psychoanalytic Institute, where he is also the Chair of the Curriculum Committee. He is a member of the Board of the Berkshire Psychoanalytic Institute, of the Foundation of theInternational Neuropsychoanalysis Society, and the Hope For Depression Research Foundation. In 2007 he became co-editor of the Journal, Neuropsychoanalysis.
He has written articles on the subjects of semiotics and information theory, the biology of consciousness, neural-network theory in psychoanalysis, and, recently, two papers inJAPA: one on biological aspects of identification, and one on the effects of interdisciplinary studies on psychoanalytic practice. He has written the chapter on Psychotherapy in the Oxford University Press textbook, Psychiatry.
